지리 - 면적은 약 1천만 평방킬로미터로 세계 제 2위이며, 한국의 4, 5배에 해당된다.
동서로 약 5천 킬로미터이고, 남북으로는 4천6백 킬로미터로
10개 주가 있으며, 북쪽으로 3개의 영토가 있다.
British Columbia주, 동쪽으로 Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba,
Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick,
Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland 의 10개 주가 있고,
Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut 등의 3개의 영토가 있다.
환경 - 캐나다는 풍부한 천연 자원과 아름다운 자연 환경을 갖고 친절한 주민이 살고 있는 세계에서 가장 살기 좋은 나라의 하나인 복지 국가이다.
역사 - 지금부터 수천 년 전에 동양족인 에스키모가 북극권의 얼음지대를 통하여 캐나다 북쪽에 이주해 와서 살기 시작하였는데, 그들을 “Inuit(이누잇)”라고 부른다.
또한 캐나다 전역에 원주민인 인디언들이 살고 있는데 주로 인디안 특별 거주지에 살고 있으며 Inuit과 합쳐 약 30만 정도의 인구가 된다.
Canada라는 말은 인디안 종족 중의 하나가 쓰던 말(인디언 말로는 Kanata로 통나무 집들이 모여 있는 부락이라는 뜻)이 인디언 나라 이름으로 잘못 인식되어 쓰이게 되었는데 이것이 지금의 국명이 되었다.
캐나다 땅의 존재는 오래 전부터 유럽인들에게 인식되어 왔지만 1497년 처음으로 영국이 국왕 헨리 7세의 이름으로 뉴화운드랜드와 동쪽 지역을 자국의 영토로 주장하였고,
그 후 1535년 프랑스의 Jacques Cartier의 인도 하에 오늘의 Montreal인 Hochelga 인디안 마을까지 St. Lawrence 강을 따라 정착하였고, 영국인은 동부에 광범위하게 살아왔다.
1700년 이후에 점차 충돌하기 시작하였으나 1759년 프랑스계의 퀘벡시가 몰락함으로써 영국 통치의 문이 열리게 되었다.
1776년 미국의 독립으로 영국 왕 충성자들은 남부 온타리오에 정착하였고 1812 – 1814년에는 영국과 미국의 충돌로 캐나다까지 전쟁에 휩쓸리게 되었다.
1867년 퀘백주와 온타리오 주의 캐나다에 몇 개 주가 병합하여 Confederation으로
캐나다가 탄생되었다.
